In this day and age, it is so easy to fall into a pattern of continually criticizing other people. We see it all around us – from political leaders hurling insults back and forth to kids bullying each other in school and on social media. When criticism is all around you – it can be difficult to take a step back and remember that we are all human and criticizing each other only leads us down the path toward more negativity.
This quote card from Dr. Brené Brown’s website reminds us that we can make a bigger impact on the world around us if we contribute to the conversation instead of criticizing each other.
Turn Your Criticisms into Contributions
Here is a list of three meaningful actions to take to contribute more:
- Get Involved – Instead of criticizing others for what they are doing, take action yourself. Do your part to work toward a change you would like to see.
- Praise Others – Instead of focusing on what someone does wrong, instead focus on what they are doing right and praise them for it. Then, when you suggest how they can do something better in the future, they will be more likely to listen to your suggestion.
- Seek a Higher Consciousness – Listen without passing judgement. Just because you disagree with someone or don’t understand something, doesn’t mean they are wrong. Try to have a conversation about it, without making it personal. Educating yourself on other viewpoints can help you understand other people better and learn how to better formulate your arguments to help bring people to a consensus. And don’t forget – it’s OK to agree to disagree.
