Group Mental Health Counseling
Group mental health counseling refers to two or more persons who share a common interest or goal and come together to use mental health counseling as a tool to achieve a common objective.
Is Group Therapy Right for Me?
Groups go through stages in their relationship in which some days are more challenging than others. And when issues arise in groups, group members may need assistance addressing these issues and working toward a solution.
Group therapy can help group members address and solve issues by adding a counselor to the equation. The counselor serves as an impartial guide that may be able to identify underlying issues impacting the relationship and/or by providing guidance and tools to help resolve these issues.
What Happens in a Group Therapy Session?
Group therapy sessions provide a safe environment for group members to have honest and respectful exchanges. It allows group members to get real with each other but also provides guidance from a counselor to ensure these exchanges stay on track. Group members will learn to identify, express, and receive emotions/feedback/feelings and needs.
During the first session, Dr. Alyx MacTernan will collaborate with group members on a longer-term plan that works for them. And in terms of session frequency, most groups meet for counseling with Dr. Alyx MacTernan at least twice per month.
