Concept of stress in the work place with businessman sleeping on a laptop

Mental illness is taking its toll on the American workforce and is one of the top causes of worker disability in the U.S. According to some studies, workers attribute up to 62% of missed workdays to mental health conditions.

Susan Rupe recently published an article on the topic for InsuranceNewsNet. In the article she highlights some key findings from the Unum report, “Strong Minds At Work”.

  • Of workers diagnosed with a mental illness, 67% suffer from anxiety disorder and 66% have been diagnosed with depression.
  • More than half (55%) of working adults said their employer did not have, or they were unsure whether their employer had, a specific program, initiative or policy in place to address mental health.
