Elemental Mental Health Treats a Variety of Mental Disorders

The therapist at Elemental Mental Health uses person-centered therapy to treat a wide variety of mental health disorders and conditions. Some of the most common conditions include:

Aging

Aging is a natural process that may present challenges for some individuals and their families. Adjusting to a new phase in life may create feelings of sadness, regret, and/or anxiety. With therapeutic support, individuals may find relief in addressing fears of aging.

And fears associated with our own aging may only be a piece of the puzzle. Addressing the aging of not only us, but also our parents, is beneficial to our interpersonal relationships.

Anger Management

Everyone feels anger sometimes. It is normal. Anger is an adaptive emotional response to the experiences of hurt, injustice, fear and frustration. Anger often inspires a powerful physical response in the body, such as a rush of adrenaline, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and fast breathing. This physical response can lead to aggressive behavior, which allows us to defend ourselves if attacked.

Feeling anger is not the problem, it’s what we do with that volatile emotion that can lead to problems. Anger, if not managed properly, can become destructive at work, in relationships, and affect our overall well-being.

Anxiety

Over 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety. The symptoms can have a wide range of expression and in many cases can be addressed through some healthy adaptive coping skills such as exercise, meditation and mindfulness.

However, for many others, self-medicating with substances, engaging in maladaptive behaviors, and obsessively attempting to manage the symptoms creates a torrent of problems, which may need a higher level of intervention.

Body Image

A negative or unhealthy body image can contribute to low self-esteem, depression, and affect overall well-being. When negative mental thoughts about one’s body or having a negative attitude toward one’s image causes distress or interferes with function, a mental health professional may be able to help explore and address these concerns.

Communication Issues

Communication issues have the potential to develop into negative circumstance in our interpersonal and social relationships. Misunderstandings are common and can lead to conflicts at home, work, and in our social circles. It may be helpful to have the support of a counselor when exploring the reasons why communication issues occur or while working through any distress or difficulty that occurs as a result of frequent communication issues.

Depression

Depression is different for everyone. Paying attention to your mood and behaviors is key to identifying triggers for depression and to seek treatment. Seeking treatment early is integral to successful outcomes.

Divorce

A change in lifestyle or divorce may evoke feelings of relief or anxiety. Others may experience grief, guilt, anger, confusion, fear, shame, and stress.

If children are involved, the stress of divorce may be more intense. Family therapy and/or individual therapy can help to address these feelings during this time of adjustment.

Family Problems

Division of family members due to conflict is a common occurrence. Manifestations of familial stress may result in challenging, frustrating, and painful interactions among family members. The development of positive communication skills may improve familial relationships with a history of strain.

Grief

Most people will experience loss at some point in their lives. Grief is a reaction to any form of loss. Bereavement is a type of grief involving the death of a loved one.

Bereavement and grief encompass a range of feelings from deep sadness to anger. The process of adapting to a significant loss can vary dramatically from one person to another. It often depends on a person’s background, beliefs, and relationship to what was lost. Seeking help quickly may help to reduce the symptoms of grief and loss in a timelier manner.

LGBTQ+ Issues

LGBTQ+ youth who experience family rejection, bullying and violence in school, work, or their community are at an increased rate of engaging in suicidal behavior. Older LGBTQ+ persons, regarded as an invisible population, report experiences of grief, isolation, elder abuse, and barriers in accessing health care.

Acts of violence occur towards transgender persons in the United States of American every two minutes. Many of these acts of violence go unreported due to the sense of fear experienced by transgender persons. These experiences can also contribute to traumatic stress and include symptoms of fear, anxiety, social anxiety, panic, paranoia, and depression.

Self-Care

Self-care is active participation in enhancing the quality of your health. Some people may think that nurturing the self is for the narcissist. However, it is a vital part of maintaining good health and a vibrant life. Creating self-care plan habits now can affect your quality of life both now and in the future.

Sleep Disorders

Sleep plays a large role in the healthy functioning of the mind and body. It can be a key indicator of overall health. If you think you may be sleeping too much or too little, seeking counseling may help improve your sleep hygiene habits, which in turn increases, your overall health.

Stress

Stress is often defined as a bodily response to the demands of life. But there are also emotional and mental aspects of stress. It is experienced as thoughts and feelings, as well as, in the body.

Another way to define stress could be as an internal and conditioned response to external pressures. By developing stress management skills and techniques, including mindfulness – stress reduction may occur.

Trauma

A traumatic experience can have a significant impact on a person’s mental health and one’s overall ability to function. Some trauma survivors may engage in maladaptive/dependent behaviors in an attempt to adapt to the overwhelming disruption that the trauma caused, which can become self-defeating.

Women’s Issues

Women may experience certain biological, environmental, and psychosocial challenges related to gender, and these concerns can have a significant impact on mental health and well-being.
